“You’re not
going to watch that again are you?” my Dad yells from the kitchen.
“How many times have you seen that thing?” as he continues to rummage through the
refrigerator looking for left over Thanksgiving turkey.
It’s a few days
after Thanksgiving 1970 something and the Christmas holiday is in full gear
already.
I have always been a
fan of the Christmas special. Charlie
Brown, The King Family Christmas, The Carpenter’s Christmas, Perry Como’s
Christmas Show. You name it and I would
be glued in front of the TV.
Today it is
“How The Grinch Stole Christmas”
I’m talking about the original cartoon narrated by Boris Karloff and
directed by Chuck Jones. The same Chuck
Jones that did the Bugs Bunny cartoons all of my generation watched every
Saturday morning. If you are wondering
Thurl Ravenscroft is the fellow that sang the song and is also known as the
voice of Tony the Tiger. This is an
all-star lineup if there ever was one.
No wonder it has lasted over the years.
My favorite part of
the story happens when the sled full of toys is about to go over the side of
the mountain. The animators put an xray
over the Grinch’s chest and show how “in Whoville they say the Grinch’s small
heart grew three sizes that day.”
Have you ever been
to a business and can tell their heart just isn’t in it? It’s like the business is falling apart from
the inside. They know they provide an
inferior product or service and seem to flinch when you walk through the
door. Like they know you are going to be
disappointed and are waiting for the complaints to start coming at them.
I went through this
in my running career. My heart wasn’t in
it. I was not eating properly, not
getting enough sleep, not training through the week. I would show up on Saturday for the long run
and end up bailing out less than a mile into the route. My heart did not embrace the “spirit of
the run”.
I believe this lack
of heart led to my injury as well. I
also believe over the past several weeks and months that my heart has grown
three sizes as I look forward to the upcoming running season. I’ll keep you posted.
Is there something
invisible to outside world that you are waiting to show to those you care
about?
You can learn a lot
from the most unexpected places.
